2015.12.03 01:57
心の栄養 ＠ Farmer's Market The thing about the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market in San Francisco is that it's just so beautiful. Pumpkins pears apples lemons and oranges, green beans Romanesco cauliflower carrots, cilantro and parsley and purslane and romaine.... and on it goes. It's a dizzying array of deliciousness and nutrition for the body, but at the same time it nourishes the soul with its bounty and beauty. The fresh and largely-organic produce shows off its colors and earthy shine, and not to be outdone by Nature's palette and design, shoppers and vendors show up with all kinds of outfits and bags, like this woman with her rubber chicken purse. 2015.10.25 02:50
LITTLE FREE LIBRARIESIn these times of Kindles, iPad readers, iPhones and all things digital, sitting down with a good book in hand can almost seem old-fashioned. Who goes to the library anymore? I used to love sitting at old wooden library tables, poring through dictionaries, encyclopedias, novels, picture and history books. Now I don’t even have my own library card. When I want a book, I can order it online or download it onto some device, so even my old favorite pastime of browsing in bookstores has become a thing of the past. So I’ve been pleasantly surprised to discover “Little Free Libraries” on the streets of San Francisco, right in my city neighborhood. Built and put up by individuals who’ve registered with littlefreelibraries.org, these little boxes have books free for the taking, with the expectation that you’ll either return the book, or replace it with one of your own. I’ve taken a handful of books to these libraries in exchange for others, and love the idea of recycling books in this way. The mini-library boxes are generally built using recycled and found materials, and builders are encouraged to use “green” methods of construction. I wonder what other free services could be offered like this from among the things that tend to pile up at home?
